About Esquimalt
With deep roots, scenic shorelines, and a tight-knit, engaged community, Esquimalt is one of Vancouver Island’s most unique places to live, work, and enjoy.
A Community with History.
Esquimalt sits on the traditional territory of the Lekwungen Peoples, including the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations, whose history and presence continue to shape the township today. The name Esquimalt comes from the Lekwungen word "Es-whoy-malth", meaning "place of gradually shoaling waters."
Esquimalt was incorporated as a township in 1912, but its story started long before that — from Indigenous stewardship to becoming the base for the Royal Navy's Pacific Fleet in the 1800s, and today, hosting the Royal Canadian Navy at CFB Esquimalt. Our naval roots are strong, and our community values are even stronger.
Geography & Neighbours.
Esquimalt spans just over 7 square kilometers, bordered by Victoria, View Royal, Saanich, and the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
With stunning views, walkable streets, and more than 40 parks and green spaces, it’s easy to enjoy the outdoors.
Take a stroll through Esquimalt Gorge Park, a bike ride along the E&N Trail, or a paddle board out on the water to experience Esquimalt in all her glory.
Proudly Local.
We believe the heart of the township is its people — and the businesses, markets, events, and gathering spaces that bring us together.
By supporting local shops, restaurants, services, and makers, we keep our community strong and sustainable. Whether it’s grabbing coffee from your go-to café, discovering handmade goods at a seasonal market, or getting to know the stories behind your favourite local businesses, every purchase helps shape Esquimalt’s future.
We’re proud to highlight what makes Esquimalt special — and to remind each other that you don’t have to go far to find something great. It’s all right here.
